Applied externally to the patient and decrease the atmospheric pressure surrounding the thorax to initiate inspiration.

-inflates patient’s lungs at predetermined intervals regardless of patients inspiratory effort. Delivers a preset tidal volume and rate. (vent is doing all the work even if person is awake and breathing on own) |

What does assist-control mean in regard to a ventilator? |

Definition
-delivers a preset tidal volume or pressure in response to patient’s inspiratory effort. Will initiate a breath if patient fails to do so within a preset time. Ex: CMV (a coma patient on control wakes up and begins to breathe on own, the vent will change to assist and start to just assist the patient in breathing. |
