Term
FRACTIONS
Definition

a/b not equal to 0

a = numerator

b= denominator

Term
IMPROPER FRACTIONS
Definition

7/3 - example

numerator is greater than denominator

Term
MIXED NUMBER FRACTIONS
Definition

contains a whole number plus a fraction

ex - 3 and 2/3

to turn to improper fraction - multiply the whole number by denominator and then add the numerator to the answer = 11/3

Improper fraction to a mixed number - divide the numerator by the denominator  - 23/7 equals 3 and 2/7

Term
ADDING FRACTIONS WHEN DENOMINATORS ARE THE SAME
Definition
add the numerators and do not touch the denominators
Term
ADDING FRACTIONS WITH DIFFERENT DENOMINATORS
Definition

Find a common multiple which is a number that is multiple of 2 or more numbers

ex - 24 is a a common multiple of 4 and 8 because 4x6 is 24 and 8x3 is 24.

step 1 - a/b + c/d

step 2 - ad/bd +cb/db

step 3 - ad + cb/bd

Term
FINDING THE LEAST COMMON DENOMINATOR
Definition

Find the LCD of 3/14 and 5/32

14 = 1x2x7

32 = 1x2x2x2x2x2

LCD is 224

Term
MULTIPLYING FRACTIONS
Definition

Multiply the numerators together first and then multiply the denominators

product means multiply

Term

DIVIDING FRACTIONS

Definition
flip the second fraction of the problem and then multiply it to the first fraction
Term
COMPARING FRACTIONS
Definition
cross multiply the two fractions and write the answer above each fraction.  This is how you will find out which fraction is greater.
Term
ORDER OF OPERATIONS
Definition

PEMDAS - please excuse my dear aunt sally

Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiply, Divide, Add, Subtract

Always simplify fractions first before doing the rest of the expression/problem

adding or subtracting fractions - do not mess with whole numbers

multiplying or dividing - turn into an improper fraction

is subtraction is first - do from left to right

also do problem from left to right when division is in front
