I discussed this sample calculation in class.  You will need to learn how to do these types of chain multiplication and division calculations just by pressing buttons on the calculator, without writing any numbers down onto a piece of paper.  Either use parentheses in the denominator OR hit the divide [÷] key twice as follows:

WRONG:   2 [x] 3 [÷] 4 [×][=]  7.5 (should be 0.3)

RIGHT (first method):   2 [x] 3 [÷] [(] 4 [×] 5 [)] [=]  0.3

RIGHT (second method):   2 [x] 3 [÷] 4 [÷][=]  0.3

Practice the correct sequence of keystrokes over and over again until you understand how to obtain the correct answer.

Term

Perform the following calculation in one continuous series of steps using your calculator (without writing down any intermediate numbers).

Express the answer in scientific (exponential) notation in standard form (with the number to the left of the exponent being between 1 and 10).  Use the proper number of significant figures in the final answer, and round off that answer correctly.

Using the calculator, the unrounded answer is:

1.437122726 × 1056.

Because you want to drop the "7122726," round up the last significant figure in the answer (3) to the next whole number (4).  The correct answer, rounded to three significant figures, is:

1.44 × 1056

Using the calculator, the unrounded answer is:

4.338976529 × 1053.

Because you want to drop the "8976529," round up the last significant figure in the answer (3) to the next whole number (4).  The correct answer, rounded to three significant figures, is:

4.34 × 1053

Using the calculator, the unrounded answer is:

4.477748425 × 1045.

Because you want to drop the "7748425," round up the last significant figure in the answer (7) to the next whole number (8).  The correct answer, rounded to three significant figures, is:

4.48 × 1045
