  • Reduce factors that interfere with patien'ts ability to relax

  • Use pillows for support- To reduce muscle strain and added fatigue

  • Encourage visualization of the baby passing downward smoothly through the pelvis as a result of her efforts-Provides mental images that allow her to see effects of efforts

  • Tell patient when she is making progress-knowing that her efforts are having the desired results and that the fetus is doing well gives the patient courage to continue

  • Verbal expression of frustration with a prolonged, unproductive labor
  • Changes in pulse, respiration, and blood pressure
