Term
Temperate Grassland
Definition
Temperate Grassland exists in South Africa, Hungary, Argentina, Uruguay, Russia and North America. The winters are really dry and the summers are wet in the temperate grassland. The temperature is generally cold in the winter and warm in the summer. The plants in temperate grassland are dominated with grass and the animals are large mammals. The temperate grassland’s soil is very suitable for agriculture.
Term
Chaparral
Definition
This biome is near the midlatitude coastal regions. It is called chaparral in North America, matorral in Spain an Chile, garigue and maquis in Southern France, and fynbos in South Africa. The weather in chaparral is cool during fall, winter, and spring; the temperature in summer is fairly high. The precipitation is very seasonal; it rains a lot during winters and it is very dry in the summers. The plans in the chaparral are dominated by shrubs, small trees, grasses and herbs. The animals in general feed on woody vegetation. Humans have overused the biome for agriculture.
Term
Ocean Pelagic Zone
Definition
It is the area of wide open blue water which contains wind-driven oceanic currents. This biome covers 70% of Earth’s surface in the oceanic pelagic biome, the oxygen levels are high and the nutrient is lower in the tropical areas than temperate oceans. The dominant photosynthetic organisms are phytoplankton. The spring turnover in temperate oceans produces a lot of phytoplankton that does the photosynthetic activity. The animals that live in the biome are mostly zooplankton suck as jellies, worms, and fishes that live on photosynthetic plankton. Over fishing and oil dumping have impacted the ocean pelagic biome.
Term
Tropical Forest
Definition
It is distributed around the equatorial area. The tropical forest is very warm all year round and had many rainfalls. The animals are very divers in the tropical forest and the trees fight for the light source intensely because there are many trees in different levels trying to get sunlight. Humans’ large population growth leads to agriculture that destroys tropical forests.
Term
Deserts
Definition
Deserts are spread near 30 degree north and south latitude and have very little amount of precipitation. The temperature in the desert varies a lot seasonally and daily. The plants and animals that live in the desert need to have heat tolerance, water storage which reflect the importance of water conservation in the desert. Converting the deserts into agriculture cites is very harmful and reduces the biodiversity in deserts.
Term
Savanna
Definition
Savanna is distributed around the equatorial and subequatorial regions. The rainfall happens seasonally, and the temperature is usually warm all year. Due to the dryness that savanna experience when there is a lack of rainfall, the plants that grow in savanna are scattered and have seasonal drought tolerance. The animals that live in savanna are usually large mammals. Fires set by human on the savanna can actually help to maintain the biome, but ranching affects the survival of large mammal populations in the savanna.
