Expedition

An expedition is a long trip or voyage.

Marooned

One type of punishment during a voyage was called marooning.  This is when a crewman was left on an island with a little bit of food, a little bit of water, and a gun with a single bullet. 

Mutiny

Mutiny is when the crew rebelled against their captain.  Mutiny happened during Magellan's expedition because his crew did not like the fact that he was from Portugal.

Leather, Sawdust, and Rats

Magellan's crew was out at sea for three years.  Because they ran out of food, the men had to survive on leather, sawdust, and rats.

Scurvy

Scurvy is a disease that many sailors suffered from because they didn't have fresh fruits and vegetables.  Many explorers died from this disease.
