- can be very smooth with small gaps between notes or very harsh, choppy, with big jumps

TEMPO & QUALITY CHANGES

- as emotion changes, the tempo of expression of character's thoughts likely changes

- calm: slower, frantic: very quick, etc.

- certain keys suggest/convey specific emotional qualities

- Majors: may suggest emotional balance & strength

- Minors: often indicate tension, sadness, emotional struggle

- key change w/in song

- often used to express dramatic change in character's emotion within the song

- when done w/ several shifts up, the growing excitement or enthusiasm of character is expressed

- several shifts down, the increasing sadness/negativity can be expressed

- subtle shifts in tempo, key, other elemets serve to demonstrate built up tension

- at certain points in song, tension can be released, go back to zero

- tension acts as barometer for the characters' thoughts, feelings
