Chapter 22 The Lymphatic System
Non-Specific Resistance to Disease and Immunity
What is the Lymphatic System? |
Definition
Consists of a fluid called lymph, vessles called lymphatic vessels that transport the lymph, a number of structures and organs containing lymphatic tissue (lymphocytes within a filtering tissue), and red bone marrow. Assists in circulating body fluids and helps defend the body against disease-causing agents. |

What is the purpose of resistance in the Lymphatic System? |
Definition
Abilitly to ward off pathogens that produce disease
Non-specific
Specific or Immunity |

What 4 things do the Lymphatic System consist of? |
Definition
1.Lymph
2.Lymphatic vessels
3.Lymphatic tissues
4.Red bone marrow |
Term
Definition
After interstitial fluid passes into lymphatic vessels, it is called lymph. |
Term
What are lymphatic vessels? |
Definition
They begin as lymphatic capillaries. These capillaries which are located in the spaces between the cells, are closed at one end. Just as blood capillaries converge to form venules and then veins, lymphatic vapillaries unite to form larger lymphatic vessels. |
Term
What is lymphatic tissue? |
Definition
A specialized form of reticular connective tissue that contains a large amount of lymphocytes.
Includeds tonsils, adenoids, & peyers patches. |
Term
Definition
A highly vascularized connective tissue located in microscopic spaces between trabeculae of spongy bone tissue. |

4 Functions of the Lymphatic System |
Definition
1. Drains excess interstitial fluid.
2. Returns leaked plasma protiens to blood
3. Transporting dietary lipids from the GI tract to the blood
3. Facilitating against invasions through immune responses. |
Term
What are characteristics of Lymph Vessels? |
Definition
More valves and thinner walls |
Term
What are characteristics of lymph capillaries? |
Definition
Closed-ended tubes located in the spaces between cells
Slightly larger diameter vs. blood capillaries
Overlapping endothelial cells work as one-way valves

Term
Lymphatic tissues go all throughout the body except for these 4 places: |
Definition
1. Avascular tissue
2. CNS
3. Parts of the spleen
4. Red bone marrow |
Term
Structure of lymph vessels: |
Definition
Unique structure allows interstitial fluid to flow in but not out.
-Anchoring filaments attach endothelial cells to surrounding tissues.
-If excess interstitial fluid, ancoring filaments are pulled inlarging the opening between cells to allow more fluid into lymphatic capillaries. |
Term
Lymphatic vessel structure in skin and viscera: |
Definition
In skin: lymph vessels in SQ tissue and generally follow veins
In viscera- generally follow arteries and form networks (plexuses) |
Term
Definition
-Specialized lymph capillaries in the small intestine that carry dietary lipids --> lymph vessels --> blood |
