Valgus Stress Test of Knee |
Definition
Apply valgus stress at 0 and 30 degrees flexion.
Positive If Increased Pain or Laxity Indicates MCL sprain |

Term
Varus Stress Test of Knee |
Definition
Perform: Apply varus stress at 30 and 0 degrees flexion
Positive: Increased Laxity or pain
Indicates: LCL sprain |
Term
Anterior/Posterior Drawer Test of the Knee |
Definition
Apply: patien lies supine with hip flexed 45 degrees and knee flexed 90 degrees. Pull tibia anteriorly and push posteriorly
Postive: Increased Laxity
Implications: ACL sprian (anterior translation) or PCL sprain (posterior translation
Term
Definition
Perform: patien lies supine knee flexed 20-25 degrees. Grasp tibia around the tuberosity and gras femur above condyles with other hand. Draw tibia anteriorly while posterior pressue is applied to femur.
Positive: Increased Laxity
Implications: ACL Sprain |
Term
Definition
Perform: patient lies supine, use one hand to support lowe leg while your thumb and index finger of opposite hand is postioned in anterior joint lines (medial and lateral) of patellar tendon. Place varus/valgus force on knee while rotating tibia and moving knee through flexion and extention
Positive: popping, clicking, or locking of knee
Implications: meniscal tear |
Term
Anterior Drawer Test of Ankle |
Definition
Perform: have patient sit over edge of table with knee flexed. Examiner stablizes tib/fib with one hand and pulls the foot anteriorly
Postive: talus slides anteriorly (look for sucking in of skin when you pull ankle)
Implications: sprain of the anterior talofibular ligament |
Term
Talter Tilt Test of Ankle |
Definition
Perform: Examiner stabilizes lower leg with one hand and other grasps talus and calcaneus applying inversion/eversion stress.
Positive: Talus tilts excessivly or increased pain
Implications: Calcaneofibular Ligament Sprain (Inversion)
Deltiod Ligament Sprain (Eversion) |
Term
Definition
Perform: Stabilize patients lower leg with one hand and medially rotate the foot and ankle with other
Positive/Implications: Medial Joint pain (Deltoid Ligament Sprain)
Anterolateral ankle pain (syndesmosis sprain) |
Term
Definition
Perform: Patient lies prone with foot hanging of table. Examiner squeezes calf (gastroc) musculature
Postive: Foot does NOT plantar flex
Implication: Achilles Tendon rupture |
