Term

The adrenal cortex is divided into 3 zones, each associated with secretion of a different hormone. Starting from the outside of the adrenals going in, they are:

Definition

1.  Zona glomerulosa secretes aldosterone (mineralocorticoid)

2. Zona fasciculata secretes cortisol (glucocorticoid) and stores androgens and estrogens

3. Zona reticularis secretes androgens and estrogens (sex hormones) and stores cortisol precursors, which are cholesterol esters

Term
following stress or by administering ACTH the zona fasiculata....
Definition
has cells that appear identical to the ones found in the zona reticularis. It was found that the hormone precursors for cortisol (i.e. cholesterol esters) were lost
Term
Since death is a rather stressful event, the _______ has a ________ post-mortem as death is a stressful event, unless the death occurred ________

Conn’s Syndrome
Definition
Primary Aldosteronism- aldosterone-secreting adenoma in the zona glomerulosa

-most frequently in middle-aged adults (30s-40s) and is twice more common in women than in men

-small (<2cm), well-circumscribed lesions

-lipid-laden cortical cells

-eosinophilic, laminated cytoplasmic inclusions, known as spironolactone bodies

-subsequent suppression of renin-angiotensin system and decreased plasma renin activity

-hypertension, hypokalemia and alkalosis--> tetany
