Definition
- Think "paipillary" - nipple, at the top
- At the top 1/5 of the dermis, superficial
- Comprised of:
- Areolar connective tissue
- Dermal papillae
- Meissner's corpuscles
|
|
|
Term
|
Definition
- The most basal region of the dermis, bottom 4/5 of the dermis.
- Much thicker than the paillary region
- Comprised of:
- thicker things
- Dense irregular connectie tissue
- Thick collagen fibers/elastic fibers
- some adipose, hair follicles
- Pacinian corpuscles - deep pressure/vibration

Term
Dermis: Papillary Region - Meissner's Corpuscles
|
|
Definition
- A type of mechanorecepter
- They are unmyelinated nerve endings responsible for the the sensitivity to light touch.
- The number of Meissner's corpuscles drops 4-fold b/t age 12 and 50.
- Adapt quickly but then action potentials cease

Term
Dermis: Papillary Region - Pacinian corpuscles
|
|
Definition
- A mechanoreceptor.
- Deeper than Meissner's corpuscles, responds to acute and depp pressure and vibrations
- Fewer number of them than Meissner's corpuscles.

Term
Dermis: Papillary Region - Arretor Pili Muscles |
|
Definition
- Extends from the papillary zone to the base of a hair follicle
- Smooth follicle.
- Contraction of muscle causes hair to stand erect.
- Causes goose bumps.

Skin Cancer - Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) |
|
Definition
- Basal - at the deepest layer
- The least malignant and most common skin cancer (75% of all skin cancers)
- It rarely metastasizes or kills.
- Stratum basale cell s proliferate and invade the dermis and hypodermis.
- Can be cured by surgical excision in 99% of the cases.

Term
Skin Cancer: Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SC) |
|
Definition
- Arises from keratinocytes of stratum spinosum.
- Accounts for about 20% of all skin cancers
- Grows rapidly and metastasizes if not rapidly
- Arise most after on the scalp, ears, and lower lips.
- Often hyperkeratotic, excessive growth of horny tissue (straum corneum on skin, and exphytic (growing outwards from skin) with central ulceration.
- Prognosis is good if treated by radiation therapy or removed surgically
|
|
|
Term
|
Definition
- A malignant tumor which originates in melanocytes found in the stratum basale/germinativum.
- The majority of melanomas black or brown. However some are skin-colored, pink, red, purple, blue or white.
- Treated by wide surgical excision accompanied by immunotherapy.
- Chance of survival is poor if the lesion is over 4mm thick.
