Term
Icy Dwarfs
Definition
Pluto and Triton
Too small to be planets but large enough to have satellites of their own.
Term
Pluto's orbit
Definition
Elliptical (does not travel in a circle, it is a oval)
Inclined (does not travel on the plane of the solar system, it is inclined.
Crosses the orbit of Neptune.
Term
Plutos atmosphere
Definition
Pluto is too small to hold onto an atmosphere but it has a very small one (0.0000014 ATM). It must be constantly making more atmosphere to replace the stuff that is lost.
Term
How did scientists know to look for Pluto and the other objects in the Kuiper Belt?
Definition
1. The mass distributed through the solar system stops after Neptune. They realized there should be something else out there.
2. Co mets are made of ice so as they travel through the inner solar system they are desinitgrating. In order for there to still be co mets they must be coming from somewhere.

Term
Kuiper Belt
Definition
Like the asteroid belt but this lies beyond Neptune.
It is beyond the snow line so the objects are made of ice.
All object have a inclined and elliptical orbit
Object are dark red and hard to see from earth
Term
Why did these objects never accrete into a planet?
Definition
They are so far from the sun that they move very slowly. They are also very speed out so they are accreting but the ACCRETION TIME is so long that it hasn't formed into a planet yet.
Term
What is the distribution of material in the Kuiper Belt?
Definition
There are a lot of objects in 3:2 resonance with Neptune including Pluto.
It stays near the plane of our solar system
Term
Why are there objects in 3:2 resonance with Neptune?
Definition
We see that even in the asteroid belt there are objects in 3:2 resonance with Jupiter.
3:2 resonance is the only stable resonance. Where objects orbits are not effected at all by what they are in resonance with.
Term
Comets
Definition
Icy objects from the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud That get pulled into the outer solar system by Neptune and Jupiter
Term
Where did Tritan come from?
Definition
Triton was a kuiper Belt object before it got captured by Neptune
Term
What are the two types of comets?
Definition
1. Short orbit comets
2. Long orbit Comets.
Term
Short orbit comets
Definition
Orbit in less then 100 years.
From the Kuiper Belt
Stay close to the plane of the solar system.
Stay close to Jupiter.
Term
Long orbit comets
Definition
Orbit is more then 100 years.
They come from all directions in the sky.
Their origin is the Oort cloud
Term
Oort Clowd
Definition
Right at the outer limit of the suns gravitational pull.
Material that was shot our of the solar system during the brief moment that Saturn and Jupiter were in 2:1 resonance.
We have never seen it because it is too far away.
Term
The to tails of a comet
Definition
1. dust and material from the disintigrating com met.
2. Gasses that reflect the light from the sun.
Term
What is the tail of a comet?
Definition
Gas and materrial that jets off of the icy commet as it moves through the inner solar system.
It is made of water, CO2, and Amonia.
Term
Does a comet have a tail lurked the snow line?
Definition
No.
It stays frozen
