Term
Definition
-Involves patella and femur -hard to find cause because there are many possible causes -chronic injury (occurs over time because of overuse) -increased forces during bent-knee weightbearing activities tend to elicit pain in the patellofemoral joint |
Term
Definition
-inflammation of patellar tendon -often occurs in sports with repetitive high force movements like jumping |
Term
Definition
-painful inflammation of infrapatellar fat-pad, which lies under the patellar tendon -often confused with patellar tendonitis |
Term
Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) Sprains |
Definition
-Often caused by an outside force to the knee or a high-energy twisting maneuver. -caused by stretching and a valgus force on medial tibiofemoral joint -classified by a severity on grade I-grade III scale |
Term
Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) Sprain |
Definition
-can be caused by a blow to the medial side of the knee, resulting in a varus stress to the knee joint -classified on grade I-grade III scale |
Term
Torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) |
Definition
-a tear or rupture to ACL -can be caused in a non-contact manner: a loaded knee joint in a combined position of flexion, forward motion, and rotation of the tibia on the femur can rupture the ACL |
Term
Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) Tear |
Definition
-hyperflexion can cause PCL tear without a direct blow -most often caused during a fall on a bent knee, with the foot flexed w/ toes pointing away, and the tibia striking first and getting pushed back -often occurs during athletic, motor vehicle, and industrial accidents |
Term
Definition
-menisci can be torn when knee is twisted suddenly and one or both menisci are trapped between femur and tibia -can also occur when ligaments around knee are torn -chances of getting torn increases with age -medial meniscus is torn more often than lateral (think MMM- medial meniscus more!) |
Term
Epiphyseal (Growth-plate) Injuries |
Definition
-growth plate/epiphysis is the end of long bonds that are made up of cartilage cells that would form new bone -this injury may result in abnormal bone growth |
Term
Osgood-Schlatter Condition |
Definition
-mostly teenage male athletes who suffer from this -condition where the femur grows faster than the muscles holding it, and then increases pressure on the tibia. This causes irritation on the bone of the femur as it pulls from muscles and onto tibia, which results in pain. |
