Term

Linear Motion

(translatory motion)

Definition
Occurs in more or less a straight line. All parts of the object move the same distance, in the same direction, at the same time.
Term

Rectilinear Motion

Definition

Movement occuring in a straight line.

(Ex. A child sledding down a hill)

Term
Curvilinear Motion
Definition

Movement occurs not in a straightline but in a curved path.

(Ex. the path a diver takes, after leaving the diving board until entering the water.)

(Earth's orbit around the sun)

Term

Angular Motion

(rotatory motion)

Definition

All parts of the object move thru the same angle, in the same direction, at the same time. (They do not move the same distance)

Ex. Elbow flexion..hand travels farther than wrist or forearm.

Term
Underlying aims of kinesiology for analysis & modification of human movement
Definition

Safety: structure movements to avoid

             doing harm to the body

Effectiveness: success or failure of meeting

             goals of effective performance

Efficiency: achieve movement w/ least

             amount of effort

Term

Planes of the Body

& their axes

Definition

Plane                     Axes

Sagittal                 Frontal

Frontal                  Sagittal

Transverse           Vertical

Always right angles

Term

Most movements within the body tend to be                 .

While most movements outside the body tend to be                .

Definition

Angular

linear

Exception: Scapula

Twirling on ice skates is what type of motion?
Definition
Rotary Motion
Term
Diving and jumping are what kind of motion?
Definition
Curvilinear Motion
Term
Swinging on a swing is what type of motion?
Definition
Reciprocating motion
Term
Anatomical Lever
Definition

A bone engages in movement when a force is applied to it

(Muscles can apply force only by shortening)

Term
Skeletal Purpose
Definition
provide support, muscle attachement, & protection of organs
Term

Axial Skeleton

includes:

Definition

Skull

Spinal Column

 Sternum

Ribs

Term

Appendicular Skeleton

includes:

Definition

upper and lower

extremities

(includes pelvis)

Term

Types of Bones

and

examples

Definition

Long - Femur, tibia, humerus, ulna, radius, etc.

Short (sm. chunky solid)- Carpals and Tarsals

Flat - Sternum, scapulae, ribs, pelvis & patella

Irregular- (bones of spinal column) Veretbrae, sacrum,

                      coccyx

Term
Epiphysis
Definition
part of bone seperated from main bone by a layer of cartilage
Term
Epipyseal cartilage
Definition

where growth occurs

(when cartilage ossifies, & closure is complete, no more growth can occur)

Term

True or false

A fracture in growth plate will not effect growth

Definition
False
Term

True or False

Fracture a joint and later in life you will have arthritis

(bone on bone)

Definition
true
Term
What is the age when growth plates close?
Definition

Girls - about 15years

Boys - about 17years

Term
The sternum is            to the vertebral column.
Definition
Anterior
Term
The calcaneus is on the             portion of the foot.
Definition
posterior
Term
The hip is          to the chest.
Definition
Inferior
Term
The femur is            to the tibia.
Definition
proximal
Term
The radius is on the            side of the forearm.
Definition
Lateral
Term

When a football is kicked through the goal posts, what type of motion is being demonstrated by the football?

By the kicker?

Definition

Football - curvilinear motion

kickers leg - angular motion

Term
Looking at a spot on the ceiling over your head requires what joint motion?
Definition
Neck hyperextension
Term

Definition
Shoulder medial rotation
Term
Picking up a pencil on the floor beside your chair involves what trunk joint motion?
Definition
trunk later bending
Term
Putting your right ankle on your left knee involves what type of joint motion?
Definition
hip lateral rotation
Term
What is the only difference between anatomical position and fundamental position?
Definition

 anatomical position the forearms are

                  supinated

fundamental position the forearms are in

  neutral (btwn supination & pronation)

Term

If you place your hand on the back of a dog what is the surface referred to?

If you do the same to a person what is the surface refered to?

Definition

Dog back - Dorsal

Person - Posterior

Term

Which is heavier, compact bone

or cancellous bone?

 Why?

Definition
Compact bone is heavier because it is less pourous, spongy.
Term
What is the purpose of the seasmoid bone?
Definition

Protect tendonds of excess wear.

The patella has an additional function of increasing the angle of pull of the quadriceps muscle.

Term

Name bone markings that can be classified

                                    as

1. Depressions & openings

2. Projections or processes that fit into joints

3. Projections or processes that attach

    connective tissue

Definition

1. Foramen, fossa, groove, meatus, sinus

2. Condyle, eminence, facet, head

3. Crest, epicondyle, line, spine, trochanter
