Starting at mean sea level or zero elevation, Every 5th contour line is an index line no matter what the contour interval is. Heavily drawn line with the elevation shown on it except where the interval is too small to write the elevation |

e. The contour lines that fall between the index lines are the intermediate contour lines. These lines are more finely drawn and they do not show the elevation number. On U.S. maps, there will always be four intermediate contour lines between indexed lines. |
