Term
Os Coxa
Definition

- Also called the hip or pelvic girdle

-Each coxal bone consists of three bones that fuse together: the ilium, ischium and pubis.

-Two coxal bones are joined anteriorly by the pubic symphysis, and joined posteriorly by the sacrum.

Term
Ilium
Definition

-the largest of the three hip bones

-is the superior part of the hip bone

-consists of a superior ala and inferior body which forms the acetabulum (socket for head of femur).

Term
Ischium
Definition

-inferior and posterior part of the hip bone.

-the most prominent feature is the ischial tuberosity, it is the part that meets the chair when you are sitting.

Term
Pubis
Definition

-Pubis, meaning pubic bone, is the anterior and inferior part of the hip bone.

-the pubic symphysis is the joint between the pubes of the two hip bones.

Term
Acetabulum
Definition

-It is a deep fossa formed by the ilium, ischium, and pubis.

-It functions as the socket that accepts the rounded head of the femur.

-Together the acetabulum and the femoral head form the hip (coxal) joint.

Term
Femur
Definition

- It is the longest, strongest and heaviest bone in the body.

-The head articulates with the acetabulum of the hip bone forming the hip (coxal) joint.

-Its distal end articulates with the tibia and patella.

Term
Patella
Definition

-Patella (kneecap), that looks like a little dish

-it is a small triangular bone located anterior to the knee joint.

-the largest sesamoid bone in the body

-forms the patellofemoral joint.

Term
Tibia
Definition

-the larger, medial weight bearing bone of the leg.

-It can be remembered as being the larger bone becuase most of the time you want to tell the Truth, so the Tibia is the larger bone of the leg.

Term
Fibia
Definition

- the smaller, laterally placed bone of the leg.

-does not bear weight

-the head forms the proximal tibofibular joint

-It can be distinguished as the smaller leg bone becuase usually you would want to tell fewer Fibs, meaning the Fibula is smaller.

Term
Tarsal Bones
Definition

-7 tarsal bones

-they include the talus (ankle bone) and calcaneus (heel, largest and strongest tarsal bone).

-the anterior tarsal bones are the navicular (like a little boat), three cuneiform bones (wedge-shaped), called the third (lateral), second (intermediate), and first (medial) cuneiforms, and the cuboid (cube-shaped).

-joints between tarsals are called intertarsal joints.

Term
Metatarsal Bones
Definition

-there are 5 metatarsal bones, numbered from 1-5 from the medial to lateral position (big toe to pinky toe).

-the metatarsals articulate proximally with the first, second and third cuneiform bones and with the cuboid to form the tarsometatarsal joints.

Term
Phalanges
Definition

-they are the distal part of the foot and resemble those of the hand both in number and arrangement.

-the toes are numbered from 1-5 beginning with the great toe, from medial to lateral.

-the big toe (hallux) has two large, heavy phalanges called proximal and distal phalanges.

-the other four toes each have three phalanges- proximal, middle and distal.
