Term

What is Learning?

(Behavioral Perspective)

Definition
Relatively permanent change in mind
Term
Stimulus...
Definition
any even or thing that can effect our senses
Term
Reflexes...
Definition
involuntary/unlearned response to a stimulus
Term
Extinction (Classic)
Definition

Present the conditioned stimulus w/out the unconditioned stimulus for long period of time

Term
Spontaneous Recovery
Definition
run extinction and response comes back after period of time, even though it was suppose to be extinct
Term
Stimulus Generalization (Classic)
Definition

Respond to something that looks similar to unconditioned stimulus, but arent directly paired.

(White rabbit and white cat)

Term
Stimulus Discrimination (Classic)
Definition
Learn to repond to one stimulus, but not the other.
Term
Factors influencing Classic Conditioning
Definition
  • How well you pair the stimulus
  • # of times you do the experiment
  • Intensity of the trauma or stimulus
  • the time between the 2 stimulus when presented
Term
Watson's Study
Definition

-Little Albert-

Took toddler and showed it a white rat, initial response was happy. Then they banged pans behind baby while playing with rat. Eventually the baby cried everytime it saw the rat.

Term
Thorndike's Study
Definition

Cat in box with lever, pushes lever gets food. Cat is more likely to push the lever because of the consequence.

Term

Law of Effect

(Thorndike)

Definition
consequences of a response will effect whether it is repeated.
Term

Primary Reinforcer

(operant)

Definition

one that fufills a basic need for survival and don't need any learning.

(eating, drinking, sleeping)

Term

Secondary Reinforcer

(operant)

Definition

acquired of learned from reinforcements

(good vs bad behavior)

Term

Shaping

(operant)

Definition

reinforcing an organisms behavior as they get closer and closer to the goal.

(Getting a dog to sit, you teach and teach until the dog sits (reached the goal).

Term
Stimulus Generalization (Operant)
Definition
tendency of stimulus to revoke a reponse because it is similar to the other stimulus and behavior increases. (the letters bd, they look very similar but have different reponses)
Term

Discriminative Stimulus

(operant)

Definition

When in presents of certain people it causes you to engage in something with reinforcements.

(Drinking with friends, because it is accepted)

Term
Stimulus Discrimination (operant)
Definition

More likely to do something with one group of people and not with others because of the outcome.

(Swearing in front of friends vs searing in front of grandparents)

Term
Factors Influencing Operant Conditioning
Definition
  • size of reinforcement
  • satisfaction of reinforcement
  • condtion of stimulus
Term

Learned Helplessness

(operant)

Definition

Stimulus has learned to behave helplessly.

(Shocked 2 groups of dogs, one group could push a lever and the shock would stop, yet the other group pushed the lever and the shocks continued. after learning this the dogs just layed down and were helpless*)

Term

Observational Learning/Modeling

(Bandura)

Definition

learning that doesnt require any reinforcement. (or reinforcement happens automatically)

(getting pricked by a pin, doesnt need a consequence to occur)

Term
Bandura's Work
Definition

Some forms of learning that don't require reinforcement.

(The bobo doll experiement, kids watched video of adult beating the bobo doll and children reinacted it.)

Term

Language Acquistion Device

(Chomsky)

Definition
Enable children to learn language by just being exposed to it. (Spoken language)
Term
Interactionist View of Language
Definition
Being able to emit sounds isn't language, it has a deeper meaning as well. Thats why its a mix of Chomsky and Skinner's Views.
Term
Consolidation
Definition
Psychological change in the brain that allows you to store.
Term
Chunking
Definition
Remembering things in chunks makes it is easier. it is a good memory strategy, helps you remember more.
Term
Rehearsal
Definition
Say the items over and over again, using repetition
Term
Elaborative Rehearsal
Definition
Making a connection to other pieces of information, helps it make the tranfser to long term memory
Term
Matinence Rehearsal
Definition
Repeat over and over again to help keep it in short term memory
Term
Declarative Memory
Definition
System w/in long term memory holds: fact information, personal life effects, thoughts, facts or pictures, then you are able to talk about them and tell them
Term
Non-Declarative Memory
Definition

Motor skills, your ability to do something. (Procedural Memory)

(your body rememebers to ride a bike)

Term
Episodic Memory
Definition
Memory records events as they were subjectivly told or experienced.
Term
Procedural Memory
Definition
Incharge of skills and procedures and how to knowledge.
Term
Semantic Memory
Definition

independant of context not relating to personal experience, this is a fact, no story.

( 1+1=2)

Term
Levels of Processing Model
Definition
different degrees to which one processes, shallow and deep processing
Term
Shallow Processing
Definition
Encoding sound using Maintenance rehearsal, info easily lost
Term
Deep Processing
Definition
Make connections to other concepts to keep it in your memory. (like Elaborative rehearsal)
Term
Flash Bulb Memory
Definition
A very extreme vivid memory, where an event, emotional or traumatic is remembered in a high degree of detail.
Term
Retrieval Cue
Definition
Any stimulus that aids you to help you remember the memory. (long term memory)
Term
Recall
Definition
Person must produce information by searching your memory.
Term
Reconginition
Definition
recongnizing something as familiar
Term

Eyewitness Testimony

(Accuracy)

Definition
not very accurate because the wording of the process causes the answers to change..
Term
Serial position effect
Definition
  • Learn things in sequence, you are likely to remember things at the beginning and end and not so much the middle.

Term
State Dependant Memory
Definition
Remember things better when your in the same psychological state as you learned it.
Term
Ebbinghaus's Work
Definition

Memory and how forgetting works.

(Show something for short period of time, then take it away and ask people to copy it down)

Term
Forgetting and how it works
Definition
encoding failure, never made it into short term memory.
Term
Decay Theory
Definition
Don't use memory, it will fade over time
Term
Repression
Definition
Remove unpleasant memories  from your conciousness until its like they arent there.
Term
Psychogenic Amnesia
Definition
complete or partial loss of any personal experiences and details. (dont remember who you are or how you got there)
Term
Intereference
Definition
Facts are too similar and new and old facts are to hard to remember.
Term
Role of Hippocampus
Definition
Stores new memories.
