is float glass subjected to special heat treatment. The glass is heated to about 1150 degrees Fahrenheit, after which both surfaces are cooled rapidly. This produces compressive forces on the surfaces and tensile forces in the core. Under uniform loading, tempered glass is 4 times stronger in tensile bending strength than float glass of the same thickness. When it does break, it falls into thousands of tiny pieces. One disadvantage with tempered glass is that once tempered, it can't be cut, drilled or deeply etched. |

consists of two or more layers of glass bonded together by an interlayer of polyvinylbutyral (a plastic film). Laminated safety glass can be clear or tinted. When exceptional impact resistance is required, heat strengthened glass can enclose one or more polycarbonate laminated with inter-layers of polyvinylbutral or polyurethane. Laminated glass is excellent where high strength or acoustical control is required. |
