- Action: Lat. flexion of neck to side of active muscle; extension of head and nexk when working with splenius capitis
- Innervation: Dorsal rami of spinal nerves.

- Insertion: Longus- pass superomedially to junction of lamina and TVP or SP 2 segments above. Brevis- Pass superomedially to junction of lamina and TVP or SP immediately above .
- Action: Stabilize vertebrae and assist with extension and rotatory movements; proprioception.
- Innervation: Dorsal rami of spinal nerve.
