Intelligence and heredity |
|
Definition
- Probably fair to say that few individuals today would argue that IQ is entirely determined by genetic makeup. - Just as with evidence for heredity, there is considerable evidence for environmental influences - Similar as children, and when they reach adulthood they tend to become more different. In childhood they had very similar environments, but in adulthood there is a great difference in environment - An adopted child as a chid has a very similar IQ to their siblings, but as they grow up they begin to have an IQ similar to their actual biological parent |

Definition
- Notion of “heritability”, that percentage of population variability that can be accounted for by differences in people’s genetics – estimates for IQ generally between about 0.4 and 0.7 - Very important to remember that heritability refers to populations, not individuals – it doesn’t mean that your IQ is between 40% and 70% genetically determined! |
