antibiotics don't work
antivirals are only effective against very few
Term
Bacteria
Definition
living organisms
grow and multiply in cavities, spaces or our serum
antibiotics kill the organisms by many different mechanisms

Definition
caused by human herpes virus
complications:
- herpes zoster virus

- congenital varicella syndrome: infection of mother in early pregnancy, leads to skin abnormalities and scarring, small limbs, and (rarely) microcephaly
Term

Definition
characterized by inflammation and dysfunction of the liver
classified by letter, A - G
Hep A is transmitted by fecal-oral routes
Hep B and C are serum diseases, transmitted via blood or sexual contact
Sx: malaise, URI, anorexia, n/v, mmyalgia, arthralgia, fever, headache, rash, jaundice
**UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS MUST BE FOLLOWED

acute illness
outbreaks occur around contaminated food/water
self-limiting, but can last 3 weeks
Term
Hepatitis B
Definition
primarily an STD
lives an extended time outside humans
Term
Hepatitis C
Definition
chronic disease
20% develop liver failure (cirrhosis)
Term
Streptococcal infections
(gram+ coccus)
Definition
present in human tissues normally
unique to the bug and the place it is thriving
**Cough not associated with strep throat!!
Term
Strep
(group A)
Definition
Suppurative infections:strep throat, impetigo, myositis, pneumonia, toxic shock syndrome, cellulitis and abscesses
Non-suppurative: rheumatic fever
Necrotizing fasciitis: "flesh-eating bacteria"
Term
Strep
(group B)
Definition
strep agalctiae
colonize upper respiratory, GI and female GU tracts
can cause:
endocarditis
postpartum sepsis
neonatal pneumonia
Term
Strep
(group D)
Definition
live in the GI tract

Term
Staph
Definition
Sx: begins as a small skin lesion, progresses with redness, warmth, pain, sometimes streaking and abscess formation
Term

(condyloma accuminata)
Definition
caused by HPV
painless, pink, cauliflower looking
Term
Gonorrhea
Definition
can cause:
epididymitis
prostatitis
salpingitis
Tubal scarring from PID can lead to infertility
can cause systemic arthritis as well as ocular disease, skin lesions
Term
Chlamydia
Definition
most common STD in US
Complications: infertility, pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy
Reiter's syndrome (triad): urethritis, conjunctivitis, arthritis (can't pee, can't see, can't climb a tree)
Term
