England wanted to participate in the Indian specie trade. Since the beginning, the company traded basic stuff such as cotton, tea, salt, species and opium. This company, contributed with the emergence and the creation of the British Empire in India. This is due to the influence it had over politics and trading.
The company had opposition with the Dutch and the Portuguese, but after some years and wars, the EIC went over them and won their trading privileges. This is how the EIC managed to take control over India's economy and India's strongest trading points and as a result, the EIC had influence over politics and was able to contribute with the emergence of the British Empire in India.

Economy Policy and Development of the Britsish Raj

Abril E.
Definition
Britain itself was at its peak during that period of time, and adding the industrial development, the rise in agricultural production and the expanding trade, the ruling over India became a major source of incomes.
Therefore, economic fields like Soil production, Opium trade to China and tax to salt grew bigger, bringing incomes big enough to maintain the army and later on, to pay remaining war debts. This growth demanded as well railroad networks to connect their yields and farming towns to the main British trading centers and ports, as were the cities of Calcutta or Bombay.
As damaging as British Raj was and considering every production they exploited, it still resulted in the launching of India's modern steel industry, India's tea and coffee industry and the agricultural and miner commercialization, among others.

Aylen G.
Definition

This happened because new ideas and thoughts appeared with the French and industrial revolution the idea of liberty and equality was introduced together with democracy and nationalism. It was the birth of industrial capitalism that way India became a big market that captured the world market. They developed a judicial system and the british promoted inferiority ideas towards Indian culture, texts literature, etc. Lacking reason of scientific validity. The Indians were divided in cast and creed so it was easy to do that they also spread the idea of the superiority of christianism betweens indians. They also planned to educate the upper and middle classes with a new educational system. Everything because they wanted to create a "modern colony" but in 1858 some revolts started.

Life in the British Raj

Dina L.
Definition
India was ruled by the British for 200 years, first by the private East India Company, and then by the British government after the East India Company was finally abolished. How people lived during this period, really depended on who you were. If you were one of the top ranking British officials or one of the 1,000 odd British Civil servants, you literally lived like a king. The remainder of British officials, soldiers, businessmen lived a very comfortable life too as a superior. The rulers of the Princely states lived luxurious lives too. The minority elite Indians who got access to Western education and worked closely with the British lived a life full of opportunities too. Then, there was the emerging Middle Class, Government Clerks, Army men, Railway employees, Supervisors, Engineers, Lawyers, Academics, Printers, small businessmen catering to the British, who were living in urban centers lived reasonably comfortable lives. However, most Indians (90%) were tied to agriculture, toiled in the fields, often looking up towards the sky for rains, worrying about debt, the village moneylender, and worst-case starvation and disease.
