Great Britain's most influential utopian socialist. lived from 1771 to 1858. quit school at age 10 and went to work. by 19, he managed a large cotton mill and later purchased a spinning mill. in 1814 Owen entered a partnership with Jeremy Bentham. Owen believed that people who lived in a good environment would stop acting selfishly. Owen also believed that workers should not be dependent on their employers. he ecouraged them to form unions. he proposed the formation of "villages of cooperation" in which the unemployed would be self-supporting instead of relying on aid. |
