Term
Hypoproliferative Anemia
Definition
Acquired, constitutional disorder with chronic bone marrow hypocellularity
Can be caused by a problem with a hematopoietic stem cell, premature apoptosis of stem cells, ineffective vitamin B12 or folate, disruption of the bone marrow microenvironment, decreased growth factors, or loss of space in the bone marrow due to the infiltration of abnormal cells
Normocytic, normochromic anemia
Neutropenia
Thrombocytopenia
Hypocellular bone marrow with 70% fat
Absolute Retic Count: <25 x 10^6
Corrected Retic Count: <1%
WBC Count: <1.5 x 10^9
Hemoglobin: <7
Toxic granulation in neutrophils
Serum iron and transferrin levels are increased
Increased EPO
Increased Hemoglobin F
Insidious
Petikia
Mild-Moderate Poikilocytosis
Term
Aplasia
Definition
Overall decrease in hematopoietic cellularity
Term
Pancytopenia
Definition
Decrease in all cell lines
Term
Erythroid Hypoplasia
Definition
Decrease in the RBC cell line
Term
Myeloid Hypoplasia
Definition
Decrease in the WBC (except lymphocytes) cell line
Term
Megakaryocytic Hypoplasia
Definition
Decrease in the platelet cell line
Term
Lymphoid Hypoplasia
Definition
Decrease in the lymphocyte cell line
Term
Aplastic Anemia
Definition
Bone Marrow has <25% cellularity and two of the following:
-Granulocyte Count: <0.5 x 10^9
-Platelet Count: <20 x 10^9
-Anemia with a corrected retic count of less than 1%
Term
Fanconi's Anemia
Definition
Autosomal Recessive
Leads to chromosomal instability
90% of people end up with Aplastic Anemia
Can cause dysplasia of the bones, renal abnormalities, other organ malfunctions, and mental retardation
Term
Familial Aplastic Anemia
Definition
Subset of Fanconi's Anemia
Mucocutaneous Abnormality
Causes defects in the intestinal mucosal cells
Term
Pure Red Cell Aplasia
Definition
Retic Count: <1%
3 Types
Erythroid Hypoplasia
Severe Anemia
Decreased Retic Count
Normal platelets
Normal RBC's
Increased Hemoglobin F
Term
Acquired Acute Pure Red Cell Aplasia
Definition
Causes an Aplastic Crisis
Severe Anemia
Decreased Retic Count
Normal platelets
Normal RBC's
Increased Hemoglobin F
Term
Acquired Chronic Pure Red Cell Aplasia
Definition
Happens in middle-aged adults with immunological suppression
Severe Anemia
Decreased Retic Count
Normal platelets
Normal RBC's
Increased Hemoglobin F
Term
Diamond-Blackfan Syndrome
Definition
Congenital
Normocytic, Normochromic Anemia
Progressive Erythroblastic Hyperplasia
Results from a problem in the stem cells
Normal platelets
Normal WBC's
Normal EPO levels
Hemoglobin F is increased
Cranial-Facial Dysmorphism
Growth Retardation
Term
Renal Disease
Definition
The kidney is not producing EPO or dialysis removes the folate
