Describe four rape myths about women. Your answer should draw on lectures and reading, and make it clear why each statement or myth is not factual.
Definition
  1. Victims provoke rape by their appearnce or behavior. Many people who accept the idea of rape believe that it is very possible for women to provoke rape by wearing revealing clothing that can tempt a man to want to have intercourse with them; however, women do not ask to be raped through their appearance or dress. Even if a woman walked down a street naked, it would not give a man the right to assult her. Rapists are responsible for rape; the victim is not responsible.
  2. Women want sex but later falsely cry rape. " " believe that women who feel betrayed or wronged after receiving wanted sex is likely to accuse the man of rape. They believe it is highly possible for a woman to go to such lengths in court and that the intercourse she received was not hurtful. But actually, women are more likely not to describe a sexual assault as rape because of embarrassment or self-blame.
  3. Rough treatment is a sexual turn-on for women. Men who accept the idea of rape believe that women are turned on by men who are aggressive and force intercouse on them and that they want to be forced to have sex with because that means that the man cannot control himself. But when a woman says no to sex, she means no. Women do not want to be humiliated, terrified, or made powerless over a rape fantasy.
  4. Men cannot control their urges. Another excuse is that men simply cannot control their sexual urges and just have to have sexual intercourse with a woman, even though she says no.

Identify and describe one Supreme Court decision in the area of abortion. In what ways is this a significant decision?

Using the article by Gibb "One Woman at a Time", explain what crisis pregnancy centers are. What are their goals? What are the criticisms of them?

Definition

Roe v. Wade was a Supreme Court decision that guarenteed American women's right to have an abortion, as long as it was in their first trimester of pregnancy. First trimester abortions cannot be regulated by the States. Third trimester abortions are permitted if the life of the mother is at stake. Even though it was meant to guarntee this right to all women, it has been targeted to women under the age of 18. This is a significant decision because it divided the nation into Pro-Life and Pro-Choice camps and held that a woman's right to an abortion is determined by the stage of pregnancy, and the state cannot prohibit abortion before viability.

Crisis pregnancy centers are places where women who become unexpectedly pregnant can go to for support - emotionally, and somewhat financially. People at the centers try to calm down scared young women and try to persuade them that abortion is not the only option they have. They believe that money should not be a reason to get an abortion, and they try to help the girls visualize that there is a beating heart inside of them that they are trying to kill, and they try to persuade them not to have the abortion. Critisims of them include centers being promoted as medical facilities, while they might not even have professional licensing and the staff is just volunteers. Also, because many CPC's are Christian sponsored, it is seen as hypocritical for them to be helping out girls who had sex before marriage.

In what ways is the concept of "risk groups" both inaccurate and dangerous?

Using the article by Adam, describe two obstacles to practicing safe sex.

Definition

Risk groups often point at homosexuals, prostitutes, Heroin users, and others as the people at risk for HIV infection, and people outside of those groups feel as though they are immune to getting HIV. They believe that because they are not gay and don't use heroin that they are safe, but what they don't understand is that it is each person's behavior that creates the risk. If you are having unprotected sex, you are engaging in risk behaviors.  It doesn’t matter whether or not you are gay or straight, male or female. It is what a person does, not who he or she is, that creates the risk.
