An empire from Morocco, its capital city being Marrakesh (1070 CE); waged a holy war against Ghana in order to convert. Many new converts continued to participate in indigenous religious practices even while officially accepting Islam. The Almoravids fought among themselves, and their cattle degraded the ecology of the region. |

Its capital city was Koumbi Saleh. Ghana was both a partner and rival of the Berbers for control of Saharan trade. (Gold, slaves, hides, and ivory were transported northward in exchange for copper, silver, metal goods, horses, dried fruit, cloth, and salt transported southward.) |
