Mongols: Genghis Khan's united kingdom's the largest in world history. Not sea power, just land- failed to conquer Japan. 1241- Genghis Khan dies. In 1260, the Mongols are defeated in Syria. Pax Mongolia - 1260-1360. Trade shattered.

4. Demographic issues. 1350s- plague from central Asia. Fleas, not rats! Cities are especially bad, high altitude is better.
5. Confusion within the Catholic Church- it's dangerous to be a Pope in Italy, so the Pope goes to Avignon, France. Two Popes = Confusion.

- In 1336, the French King dies and the next in line is the English King. French nobles upset.
- England wins all important battles
- Effects: the longbow shoots further distances; no more hand to hand combat, end of chivalry, Devastated France, England becomes England
Joan of Arc: French. Hears voices from God & inspires Generals in war! The British capture her. She's too powerful for a woman, so she must be powered by the devil. She is burned at the stake. Now canonized.
