On June 19, 1301, Dante returned his famous answer Nihil fiat to the proposed grant of soldiers to the pope--Dante supported the Guelfs but the the Guelfs ( the other was Chibellines, supported the Papacy and the French) got divided into two sides, the Bianch which Dante supported because still believed in people have the right to decide for themselves, and the Neri, which the pope supported because it supported majority , he wanted popular support. Pope asked his support on the French, to wich danted wrote Nihil Fiat
