Won election as superior court judge in 1974 then was later appointed to the appeals court (by Reagan).
Relationship w/ Soviets-
Gorbachev- became the new Soviet leader in 1985. Believed that the SU had to reform its economic system or it would soon collapse. Reagan and Gorbachev disagreed on many things. Although Gor. Agreed to cut back nuclear forces if Reagan would agree to givr up SDI(Strategic Defense Initiative)(Star Wars as it was called, called for the development of weapons that could intercept and destroy incoming missles). Reagan refused.
