Plessy vs. Ferguson  

Definition

on june 7, 1892 Plessy boarded a car of the East Louisiana Railroad that was designated by whites for use of white patrons only. Although Plessy was one-eighth black and seven-eighths white, under louisiana state law he was classified as an African-American and was required to sit in the "colored" car. When Plessy refused to leave the white car and move to the colored car, he was arrested and jailed. In his case of ( Homer Adolph Plessy vs. The State of Louisiana  ) Plessy argued that the ELR had denied him his constitutional rights under the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments. However, the judge presiding over his case, John Howard Ferguson, ruled that Louisiana had the right to regulate railroad complanies as long as they operated within state boundries. Plessy later took this to the Supreme Court of Louisiana where he was also found guilty.

the war fought in 1898 to help Cuba gain its independence from Spain.  The war began after an American battleship sent to Cuba, the Maine, mysteriously exploded.  Theodore Roosevelt and his band of volunteers, the "Rough Riders," became famous in the fight.  Victory brought Cuba under U.S. protection, and outright control of Puerto Rico and the Philippines.   Filipinos expected to be given their independence.  They were not, however, because America feared that some other country would take them over.  Filipinos launched a rebellion, and American troops were sent to keep control of the islands.

Approved on May 22, 1903, the Platt Amendment was a treaty between the U.S. and Cuba that attempted to protect Cuba's independence from foreign intervention. It permitted extensive U.S. involvement in Cuban international and domestic affairs for the enforcement of Cuban independence.

Roosevelt conducted an aggressive foreign policy using Big Stick Diplomacy. Through this policy, the United States became increasingly assertive in the early 1900s.

Mysterious explosion rocks the battleship MAINE in Havana Harbor, Cuba. 266 men were killed. Initally it was believed a torpedo or mine caused the explosion. On April 25, 1898 the US declared war on Spain. A 1976 investigation found that the Maine was sunk due to a self-inflicted blast, probably as a result of coal bunker fire on board.
