|
Definition
Described as a low point in ancient Egypt history. It is generally agreed that the centralized state collapsed after the rule of Pepi II. There seemed to have been problems caused by his power on certain noble families. Pharaonic authority buckled under the pressure and powerful "nomarchs" struggled to step into the breach and take control of Egypt. Between the end of the old kingdom and beginning of the middle kingdom, there were three centers of power competing for supremacy: Memphis, Hierakliopolis, Thebes. |
