-A guttural unaspirated sound.
-A vowel-marker, usually for the vowel a, but sometimes for the other vowels.

-When alef is at the end of a word, it is VERY short/almost silent.

-if used at the end of a word, it's usually "v."

Note: When the vowel system (Nikkud) is used, the two sounds of the letter are distinguished by the existence or absence of a dot in the middle of the letter: (with dot)– b sound; (without dot) v sound
