1. Definition: a person who as the ability to experience an open, supportive, tender relationship with another person without fear of losing ones own identity

2. Depends on: perceptions of selves valuable competent good

Definition

A. Role: any set of behaviors that has a socially agreed upon function and accepted code of norms

B. Characteristics:- associated with a life stage (getting pregnant, having a child at 50 isn’t an appropriate role)-knowledge of expectations (from observations) but these are typically not complete

-most roles are linked to other roles in our lives

C. 3 elements of concern:

1. Role enactment- behaviors we take on

2. Role expectations- “scripts” what society says (we all bought mothers day cards that said the same kind of stuff) (and our fathers day cards will say different stuff)

3. Role strain

1. Number of roles- many roles provide structure and meaning to life, having the  opportunity to have kids and also have a career. Could be positive or negative, could add role strain.

 2. Intensity of involvement
