Male Adolescent

Female Adolescent

*Girls typically gain 40 lbs from 10-18 years of age

*Height-->growth fastest at age 12, additional 9 added to rach full height at age 16

Nutrition

* Increased need for protein; vitamin d & calcium

*Often makes poor food choices; fast food, sweets, caffenaited drinks

*Boys often require more calories

Rest

* Early: 9-12 hours

*Middle: 8-10 hours

*Late: 8 hours of sleep

Activity

*Early-->hangs with peers, sports, video games, hobbies

*Middle-->privacy in room seems to avoid family at times

*Late--> friends ,driving, jobs, college plans

Sexual Development

of boys

enlargement of testes, scrotum, and penis.  Axillary and pubic hair.

Facial hair appears, voice deepens.

Ability to ejaculate, then fertility, with sexual maturity at age 18

*Choking/Huffing--> be aware, look for s/s(eg. put rope around neck & cut off o2 to get high or inhaling krazy glue)

*Accidents--> # 1 cause of death, safety while driving

*Piercings/tattoo's-->Real risk here is infection

*suicide/homicide-->watch for the signs of depression(eg the bullying also)
