How Are Fossils Formed?

Definition
 Normally "hard parts" of organisms have potential for preservation because they are resistant to decay, while the "soft parts" are not, and will break down. However, even hard parts will be destroyed if they are not buried very quickly.

Is when the mineral that composed the hard tissues is leached away and replaced with a different mineral, e.g. silicification.
