Additional Geology Flashcards

Cards

Term
Geologic Unit
Definition
rock or sediments that have been mapped at a 7.5 minute quadrangle, characteristics of: geologic age, metamorphic grade, fossil content, rock type
Term
Geologic Formation
Definition

sedimentary geologic unit

non-sedimentary geologic units will typically have the rock name in its map name

Term
Contours vs. Contacts
Definition

geologic contacts - are boundaries between geologic units or formations, think black lines separating colors

topographic contours connect points of the same elevation, gray/brown

Term
Lie of the Contacts to contours
Definition

parallel  = horizontal geologic units

crossing = tilted geologic units

Term
anticlines and synclines
Definition

anticline - reverse U-shape, upfolds, youngest rocks on the outside

syncline - regluar U shape, downfolds, youngest rocks in the middle

Term
Strikes and Dips
Definition

dip - angle of incline from the horizontal plane to the inclined plane, perpindicular to strike and contacts, dip direction points to younger rocks

strike - compass bearing of a line formed by the intersection of the horizontal plane and incline plane, parallels contacts

Term
Domes and Basins
Definition

Domes - upwarp of rock layers

Basin - downwarp of rock layers

both are circular, strikes follow the circular contacts, dips point to the younger formations

Term
Earthquakes
Definition
Term
Magnitude
Definition

amount of energy released by an earthquake, a quantative measurement

estimated by measuring the amplitude of the largest shear wave from seismograms

Richter scale is logarithmic.

Term
Focus/Hypocenter and Epicenter
Definition

focus - initial rupture point of an earthquake below the surface

epicenter - point on the earth's surface directly above the focus

Term
How do seismic waves move?
Definition
either body waves or surface waves
Term
P waves, S waves, and R and L waves
Definition

P waves - Body waves, compressional, move the fastest and through materials

S waves - body waves, shear, move slower and not through liquid

R and L waves - surface, side-to-side rolling motion, move the slowest

Term
find epicenter!
Definition

calculate time lag between s and p waves, calculate difference too

use difference and compass to draw circles, overlap should come to a perfect point, NO TRIANGLES

Term
Determining magnitude
Definition
draw line from epicenter distance to magnitude
Term
Plate Tectonics
Definition
Term
Transform, Divergent, and Convergent Plate Boundaries
Definition

transform - strike-slip movements, shallow focus, offsets features of land

Divergent - rifting of the earth's crust to tensional forces produced by upwelling magma, has shallow focus

Convergent - 3 types: ocean-ocean - shallow to deep focus, volcanic island chains

ocean-continent - linear mountain ranges on land,  shallow to deep focus

continent-continent - wide mountain belts, thrust faults, shallow to deep focus

Term
Soil
Definition
Term
O Horizon
Definition
organic, must have greater than 30 organic matter if clay, greather than 20 if no clay
Term
A horizon
Definition
mineral horizons formed at surface or below an O horizon, properties may result from cultivation or disturbance
Term
E Horizon
Definition
eluviation, tends to be lighter colored and contains less organic material than the overlying topsoil
Term
B horizon
Definition
subsoil. where the ions precipitate to form new minerals and clay collects. will appear somewhat red and lack organic(dark) matter
