Types of Research

Basic vs Applied

Consensus vs Frontier Science

Definition

Basic Research (theorectical)- Answers for educational reasons.

Applied Research (technology)- answers for a reason such as finding a cure for a disease.

Consensus- All agree.

Frontier Science- "out-of-the-box" thinking.

Experiment with Swan-neck Flask

Louis Pasteur

Definition

Question: What is the source of contamination that occurs in a flask of nutrient broth left exposed to the air?

Answer: A regular flask leaves the nutrient broth to be exposed to air; contamination and growth occurs. A swan-neck flask prevents contamination because of the swan neck disign; the air only goes up to the first bed of the swan-neck. Pasteur's hypothesis was correct.
