Term
Anal Stage and response to authority
Definition
Beginning of a battle/development of a sense of independence – (going by oneself vs going when one is told).
Can backfire – parent orders child to sit on the toilet until he poops, he fights back by choosing not to poop. Lead to viewong authority as being insignificant, personality develops as the rebel. - This is not always bad, being able to say NO develops the child’s sense of being an individual. Adults – inmates, criminals, drug users
Another manifestation against strong authority – person begins to cave in to the authority, sense of anxiety or fear accompanies this. Manifests as an adult being closed minded-unquestioning, always deferring decision making
Term
Phallic stage and how relations with mom dad change
Definition
Because of the incest taboo, boys realize that they cant “keep” their mom. Developing the notion of limitations of attachments.
Once the child is able to surpass their father – develops a sense of victory in becoming a man, but become confused because at the same time the strongest male role model becomes weak compared to himself. Suddenly find themselves without a role model, and realize that they are forced into complete control of ones manhood – anxiety/emptiness provoking.
Term
Phallic stage - fixing loss of father role model
Definition
men will then construct a totem that represents their father which has been defeated, in order to keep their presence in their life.
After surpassing father - the boy will eventually see a naked girl, and realize that they dont have a penis. They view this as being caused by their father “castrating” the girl. He eventually distances himself from the mother because of him viewing her as angering her father enough to castrate her.
Term
Phallic stage - Completing Oedipal Complex
Definition
Best possible solution – good parents, child wants to be with mom, but mom says she belongs to dad, and that the child will eventually find someone of their own later in life. Father then supports the child saying its ok, and that he'll take the child under his wing.
Complete Oedipal Complex – need both the mom as representation of support, and dad as authority. After moving from mom to dad, the child then moves back to both mom and dad, accepting both of their roles.
Term
Genital stage - first choice?
Definition
Literal read – you make your first romantic (object) choice.
