•In preparation for the Worlds Fair in Paris, Napoleon 3rd requested the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce classify what was considered the greatest wines of France for the Exposition
•61 Châteaus were designated as “Cru Classé”
•5 categories or “growths” were established
•Each category or growth reflected the comparative price paid with 2nd growths being sold for 1/5th less than the 1st etc…..
•The system is still in use today with only one exception, Chateau Mouton moved to 1st growth in 1973
