Definition
An object will continue will uniform velocity unless acted upon by a resultant force
(This also means that it will remain motionless
i.e. v=0 m/s unless a force acts on it) |
|
|
Term
Newton's Second Law of Motion |
|
Definition
If a resultant force acts on an object, it will accelerate (or decelerate) in the direction of the force. The amount of acceleration is proportional to the force and inversely proportional to the mass
Force = mass x acceleration |

|
Term
Newton's Third Law of Motion |
|
Definition
If body A exerts a force on body B, then body B exerts an equal and opposite force back on body A
The pair of forces are always of the same type e.g. gravity |

Definition
Mass is the amount of matter contained within an object. It is measured in kg and is constant throughout hte Universe
Weight is the force of gravity pulling on an object. It is measured in Newtons and varies depending on the gravity of the planet.
Weight = mass x gravitational field strength |

Definition
Centre of gravity is the point of an object on which gravity acts, as though all of the mass was at that one point. It can also be defines as the point about which there is no resultant moment. In this example, the centre of mass of the man can change as he redistributes his mass to differnet positions. If the centre of mass of an object is not above the base of the object then it will topple. |
