  -7 Aug 1942  -1st MarDiv landed on Guadcanal in the Solomon Islands  -1st US land offensive of WWII.  -1st Combat test of the New Amphib Doctrine  -This was a Crucial turning point of the war in the Pacific.  -Solomon Islands included "New Georgia, Chouseul, and Bougainville".

Definition
  -Gibert Islands 1st line of offensive in the Central Pacific.  -Prime Obj: Tarwa Atoll and Betio Island  -Fortification: a Japanese commander stated "It would take a million Americans a 100 yrs to conguer it.  -20 Nov 1943, marines land and took it in 76hrs.  -But there were heavy losse due to the extended reef, many marines drowned wading to shore.

Definition
  For the need of Airfields for the AF and advance base by the Navy the Mariana were invaded.  -Marianas "Guam, Tinian, Saipan"  LtGen Holland M. Smith lead the invasion with 136,000 marines and soliders, greatest number of troops operated under a marine command at that time.

  -19 Feb 1945  -Largest all Marine battle in history  -Bloodiest battle in USMC history at 23,300 casulities.  -ADM Chester W. Nimitiz stated: "Among the  Americans who served on Iwo Island, uncommon valor was a common virtue".

  -In North Korea in Nov 1950  -Chinese Communist forces sent 10 Div to destory them.  -Marines smashed 7 Div from the march from CR.  -Marines brought out all operable equip, evac dead, and wounded, and maintained tactical integrity.

Definition
  -Brevet BGen Henderson became the Commandant of the USMC in 1820 to 1859 when he died. 39 yrs as the commandant.  -Led USMC through Indian Wars, War with Mexico, Opening China, and Disorders in Central America.  -Introduced higher standards in personnal appreance, training, discipline, to be know as a professional military force for than just guard duties.

Definition
  -LtGen Puller served in Nicaragua through periods of political unrest and rebellious activity.  -He led a force of about 32 Marines  -Nickname "Tiger of the Mountains"  -USMC Mascot, the English Bulldog is named after this brave and fine Marine Corps officer.

  -5th Amphib Corps fo Marines commanded by MGen Harry Schmit was assigned to take Iwo Jima.  -Cpl Hayes was immortalized in the second flag raising incident on Mount Suribachi after the island was taken on 23 Feb 1945.
