Suboxone

 

(buprenorphine)

Definition

Suboxone contains a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone. Buprenorphine is an opioid medication, sometimes called a narcotic. Naloxone blocks the effects of opioid medication, including pain relief or feelings of well-being that can lead to opioid abuse.

 

Route: Oral

 

Dose: Day 1: up to 8 mg/2 mg sublingually; administer as an initial dose of 2 mg/0.5 mg or 4 mg/1 mg with titration in 2 or 4 mg increments of buprenorphine at approximately 2-hour intervals

Day 2: 16 mg/4 mg sublingually as a single dose

 

Side effects include:

  • dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision, feeling drunk, trouble concentrating;

  • withdrawal symptoms;

  • tongue pain, redness or numbness inside your mouth;

  • nausea, vomiting, constipation;

  • headache, back pain;

  • fast or pounding heartbeats, increased sweating; or

  • sleep problems 

 

Patients dependent on heroin or other short-acting opioid products may be inducted with combination buprenorphine/naloxone or buprenorphine monotherapy; to avoid precipitating withdrawal during induction, initiation should occur when clear signs of withdrawal are evident, preferably when moderate objective signs of opioid withdrawal appear, and no sooner than 6 hours after last use of heroin or other short-acting opioid.

Mylanta

 

(Aluminum Hydroxide)

Definition

It is used to ease too much gas in the stomach. It is also used to treat heartburn and upset stomach.

Route: Oral suspension

Dose: one 10 mL dose as needed or as directed by a doctor

Side effects include:

  • Constipation.

  • Diarrhea.

If you are allergic to Mylanta (aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and simethicone suspension); any part of Mylanta (aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and simethicone suspension); or any other drugs, foods, or substances

Protonix

( pantoprazole)

Protonix is a proton pump inhibitor that decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Protonix is used to treat erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease, or in adults and children who are at least 5 years old. Pantoprazole is usually given for up to 8 weeks at a time while your esophagus heals.

Route: Oral

Dose: 40 milligrams (mg) once a day for up to 8 weeks

Range: before a meal

Side effects include:

  • headache, dizziness;

  • stomach pain, gas, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;

  • joint pain; or

  • fever, rash

 

Pantoprazole may cause side effects, but it does not seem to cause anxiety. Some people in clinical trials reported headaches while taking pantoprazole. Less than 2% of people in clinical trials also reported depression and vertigo.

Ditropan

 

(oxybutynin)

Definition

Ditropan XL reduces muscle spasms of the bladder and urinary tract. Ditropan XL is used to treat symptoms of overactive bladder, such as frequent or urgent urination, incontinence (urine leakage), and increased night-time urination.

Range: Oral

Dose: 10 milligrams (mg) once a day

Side effects may include:

  • dizziness, drowsiness;

  • headache;

  • dry mouth; or

  • diarrhea, constipation.

 

The tablets are made with a shell that is not absorbed or melted in the body. Part of this shell may appear in your stool. This is normal and will not make the medicine less effective.

Nexium

 

( esomeprazole magnesium)

Definition

Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor that decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Nexium is used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease 

Range: Oral

Dose:20 or 40 milligrams (mg) once a day for up to 6 months.

Side effects include:

  • headache;

  • diarrhea;

  • nausea, stomach pain, gas, constipation; or

  • dry mouth.

 

Taking esomeprazole long-term may cause you to develop stomach growths called fundic gland polyps. If you use esomeprazole for longer than 3 years, you could develop a vitamin B-12 deficiency.

Colace

( docusate and senna )

Definition

Docusate is a stool softener. Senna is a laxative. Colace 2-in-1 is a combination medicine used to treat occasional constipation. Colace 2-in-1 may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Route: oral

Dose:  50-300 mg 

Side effects include:

  • gas, bloating;

  • diarrhea; or

  • mild nausea.

You should not use Colace 2-in-1 if you are allergic to docusate or senna, or if you are also taking mineral oil.

 

Ditropan XL

( oxybutynin )

Ditropan XL is used to treat symptoms of overactive bladder, such as frequent or urgent urination and incontinence (urine leakage). Ditropan XL is also used in children at least 5 years old with overactive bladder related to a neurologic condition such as spina bifida. Ditropan XL extended-release tablet is also used in children at least 6 years old with overactive bladder related to a neurologic condition such as spina bifida.

Range: oral

Dose:  5 or 10 mg once a day for adults

Side effects include:

  • dizziness, drowsiness;

  • headache;

  • dry mouth; 

 

Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how Ditropan XL will affect you. Your reactions could be impaired. Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather. Ditropan XL can decrease sweating and you may be more prone to heat stroke

Miralax

( polyethylene glycol )

 

Definition

MiraLAX is a laxative solution that increases the amount of water in the intestinal tract to stimulate bowel movements. MiraLAX is used as a laxative to treat occasional constipation or irregular bowel movements. MiraLAX may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Route: oral

Dose: 17 g (diluted in 8 fluid ounces water, juice, soda or coffee) orally once a day

Side effects may include:

  • bloating, gas, upset stomach;

  • dizziness; or

  • increased sweating.

 

You should not use MiraLAX if you are allergic to polyethylene glycol, or if you have a bowel obstruction or intestinal blockage. If you have any of these conditions, you could have dangerous or life-threatening side effects from polyethylene glycol.

(Magnesium hydroxide) 

Definition

Magnesium is a naturally occurring mineral. Milk of Magnesia reduces stomach acid, and increases water in the intestines which may induce bowel movements

Route: oral 

Dose Take this medicine with a full glass (8 ounces) of water.

Side effects: 

  • diarrhea; or

  • a decreased sense of taste.

 

Milk of Magnesia is also used as an antacid to relieve indigestion, sour stomach, and heartburn. Milk of Magnesia may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Viagra

(Sildenafil)

Definition

Viagra relaxes muscles found in the walls of blood vessels and increases blood flow to particular areas of the body. Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men.

Range: oral 

Dose: 50 mg taken, as needed, approximately 1 hour before sexual activity.

Side effects: 

  • heart attack symptoms--chest pain or pressure, pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder, nausea, sweating;

  • vision changes or sudden vision loss; or

  • erection is painful or lasts longer than 4 hours (prolonged erection can damage the penis)

 

Viagra can decrease blood flow to the optic nerve of the eye, causing sudden vision loss. This has occurred in a small number of people taking sildenafil, most of whom also had heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or certain pre-existing eye problems, and in those who smoked or were over 50 years old. It is not clear whether sildenafil is the actual cause of vision loss.

Detrol

(Tolterodine)

Definition

Detrol reduces spasms of the bladder muscles.

Detrol is a prescription medicine used to treat symptoms of overactive bladder in adults. Detrol LA capsules did not help the symptoms of overactive bladder when studied in children.

Route: oral

Dose:  1 to 2 mg orally 2 times a day, depending on patient response and tolerability

Side effects: 

  • dry mouth;

  • dizziness;

  • constipation;

  • stomach pain; or

  • headache

 

Do not crush, chew, break, or open a Detrol LA controlled-release capsule. Swallow it whole. Breaking or opening the pill may cause too much of the drug to be released at one time.

Primrose

 

(Onagra) 

Definition

Evening primrose has been used in alternative medicine as a possibly effective aid in treating nerve damage caused by diabetes, and osteoporosis.

 

Route: oral 

 

Dose: 

 

Side effects: 

  • upset stomach;

  • nausea;

  • diarrhea; or

  • headache.

 

When considering the use of herbal supplements, seek the advice of your doctor. You may also consider consulting a practitioner who is trained in the use of herbal/health supplements.

Definition

Supplemental or sole-source tube feeding. May use orally in patients with altered taste perception.

 

Route: Enteral

 

Dose: 355Cal/8oz (1500Cal/L).

Is used for tube feedings on patients that are not able to be fed by mouth

 Capsicum

(Capsicum annuum L.)

                         
  

 

Definition

The use of capsicum in cultural and traditional settings may differ from concepts accepted by current Western medicine. When considering the use of herbal supplements, consultation with a primary health care professional is advisable. Additionally, consultation with a practitioner trained in the uses of herbal/health supplements may be beneficial, and coordination of treatment among all health care providers involved may be advantageous.

Route: oral

Dose: For external uses, capsaicin and capsicum creams are available in several strengths, from 0.025% to 0.075% capsaicin. Clinical trials are lacking to guide dosage for other uses.

 

Side effects may include:

  • upset stomach;

  • heartburn;

  • diarrhea; or

  • burning sensation in the mouth or throat or with skin contact.

 

Interactions between capsicum and other prescription or over-the-counter medicines or herbal/health supplements have not been reported. Talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or health care professional before taking capsicum if you are taking any other medicines, vitamins, minerals, or supplements
