Definition

 

People vary in degrees of 3 superfactors:

  A. Introversion/Extraversion – degree to which a person is   

             outgoing and social

  1) RAS reactivity: arousal

  High reactivity (weak nervous system) = introversion

  Low reactivity (strong nervous system) = extraversion

 

  B. Emotionally Stable/Unstable – adjustment to the   environment  and stability of behavior over time

  1) VB reactivity: motivation/emotion

  High reactivity = neuroticism, very emotional

  Low reactivity =emotional stability

 

  C. Psychoticism – no opposite pole – loss or distortion of     reality and degree of  psychopathy

Definition

 

     A) Learning maladaptive responses to stimuli

  1. Neurotic Introverts: rapid learning of emotional responses (hyper-sensitive to stimuli)

           • anxiety disorders (phobias, OCD, panic attacks): learn irrational fears that become maladaptive

 

  2. Neurotic Extraverts: unable to learn emotional responses (hypo-sensitive to stimuli)

        • psychopathic disorders: improperly conditioned conscience
