As a default, all cells are locked as indicated by the orange border around the padlock icon for the Lock Cell option on the Format menu in the Cells group on the Home tab.
Before protecting the worksheet, you should unlock the cells that you want users to be able to edit.
Select the cells in which you want users to be able to enter or edit data.
Click the Home tab, then click Format in the Cells group.
Select Lock Cell in the Protection section to unlock the active cell or selected range of cells

Protecting the template is typically the final step in the creation of a custom template because you need to enter standard labels, create formulas, and unprotect input cells first.
Type a password in the Password to unprotect sheet box, then click ok. Confirm Password dialog box opens. Type the same password in the Reenter password to proceed box.
Read the caution statement, then click ok.
Passwords can be up to 255 characters, including letters, numbers, & symbols. It is case sensitive.

Found under the View tab, click Macros in the Macros group, then select Stop Recording.
Click the Developer tab, then click Stop Recording in the Code group.
Click Stop Recording on the status bar.

Macros records the cells as absolute references. When you run the macro, the macro executes commands on the absolute cells, regardless which cell is the active cell.
If you want flexibility in that commands are performed relative to the active cell, click the Macros arrow in the Macros group on the View tab, then select Use Relative References before you perform the commands. |
