Term
Nitrous Oxide
Definition
gaseous inhaled general anesthetic. low lipid and blood solubility leads to rapid induction. MAC high, so low potency, cannot be used alone for surgery. Analgesia, nonirriating to airways, incrases intracranial pressure. Use: Adjunct to other anesthetics, or alone for minor procedures (dentist), or if person is scared of IV.
Adverse: Cannot use at pp > 70 or hypoxia results. during emergence can cause drop in PaO2 = diffusion hypoxia.
Term
Halothane
Definition
sweet smelling inhaled general anesthetic. moderate blood solubility, medium rate of induction. Low MAC, very potent. Analgesia, nonirritating to airways. Incrases intracranial pressure. Can cause hypotension and moderate reduction in resp rate. Adverse: Not used much bc may cause hepatic toxicity, liver necrosis, death.
Term
Isoflurane
Definition
gold standard of inhaled general anesthetics. Moderate solubility, medium induciton. Intermediate MAC, second most potent inhaled anesthetic. Analgesia, Muscle Relaxation. Can be irritating to airways (so dont use it to put asthmatics under). Decreases intracranial pressure, causes hypotension, potent resp depressor. Use: Most commonly used inhaled anesthetic. Advantagous for neurosurgery.
Term
Thiopental
Definition
IV General anesthetic, barbituate. high lipid solubility and potency. Muscle relaxation, decreases intracranial pressure, non irritating to airways but can cause bronchospasm at low levels. hypotension. profound resp depression. Use: Induction of anesthesia, not maintinance because of long emergence times.
Term
Propofol
Definition
IV General anesthetic. highly lipid soluble. Muscle relaxation. can increase seizure in epileptic ppl. No airway irritation. moderate hypotension, profound resp depression. Adverse: allergic reactions Uses: most widely used general anesthetic. v potent. good for induction, rapidly metabolized by liver, so good for maintinance too.
Term
Ketamine
Definition
IV General anesthetic, related to PCP. more lipophilic and potent. Analgesia. Can cause disorientation, excitation, hallucinations during recovery. Not commonly used. Use: in ppl with hypotension and bronchospasm. maintains patent airway. Aviod: HTN or anyrism.
