BACTERIA: no host needed, does not invade tissue
Term
What is the process for Sanitizing Implements ?
Definition
1. Follow manufacturer's directions
2. Euro....wash in hot soapy water

Definition
Unit that measures strength of an electric current (# of electrons flowing thru a conductor) MEASURES STRENGTH
Term
Name & Explain the types of temporary hair removal
Definition
EPILATION -removal of hair by breaking contact between the bulb & papilla. EX: waxing, tweezing, sugaring, threading. Removal below the surface.
DEPILATION- removing hair at the surface
2 kinds: Chemical- disolves hair- Nair
Physical-removes hair on surface
Term

2. Clautisphobia
3. Excessive Watery Eyes
4. Inflammation
5. Contacts
6. Recent Eye surgeries
Term
Name & Explain the difference between Emulsion & Solution
Definition
EMULSION: a mixture of 2 immiscible substances that combine with help of a binder or emulsifier. 2 substances wouldn't normally mix together.
SOLUTION: 2 or more solids, liquids,or gaseous substances that WILL NOT separate upon standing.
SOLUTE + SOLVENT = SOLUTION
DIFFERENCE: Emulsion requires emulsifier/binder to avoid separation.
Solution =immediately dissolves
salt + water = salt water
Term
Name 2 types of Emulsions
Definition
1. O/w = Oil in water
2. W/o = Water in oil
Term
Explain O/w (Oil in Water) Emulsion
Definition
- Oil droplets suspended in water
- milky, lightwt emulsion
- best for skin that produces enough own oil
- Absorption: IMMBIBITION level gives temporary plumping
- Examples: Royal Jelly cleanser, Cucumber cleanser, Men's hydro complex
Term
Explain W/o (Water in oil)
Definition
- Water droplets suspended in oil
- heavier, greasier, more lipid
- mostly oil
- helps prevent TEWL, remains on skin longer
- HORNY ASSIMILATION absorption level: deeper penetration
- Ex: Moor sensitive care balm, Sesitive beauty PM, Moor balm
Term
List 5 benefits of Massage
Definition
1. Stimulates blood/lymph circulation in facial capilaries.
2. Brings oxygen & nutrients to skin
3. Muscle tone- good amt w/out overdoing
4. activates sluggish skin
5. sloughs off dead skin cells
6. cleanses impurities & softens sebum
7. provides mental/physical well being
8. relieves muscle tension/pain
9. reduces puffiness & congestion
10. relaxes client & facial muscles.
Term
Name & Describe classic massage moves
Definition
1. Effleurage-soft,continuous stroking w/fingers & palms in slow rythmic manner
2 Petrissage-kneading movemnt
stimulating underlying tissues
3. Tapotment-percussion moves;slapping tapping or hacking.
4.Friction-rubbing move
-chucking = 1 hand steady,&
1 rubbing along bone
-rolling = chinese bracelets
-wringing = rotaries
5. Vibration-rapid shaking movement
Term
What are the benefits of steam?
Definition
good for sinuses & congestions
oxygenates skin
warmth relaxes skin & tissues
easier extractions
stimulates circulation
softens sebum & debris
Ozone=antiseptic effect
Term
What are the benefits of Lucas ?
Definition
Calming & Soothing
Hydrating
Cools Skin
Specializes treatment by adding herbal tea, essential oils, or flower extracts
Term

Definition
Acne/Problematic Skin
Dry/Dehydrated Skin
Mature Skin
Alipidic Skin
Term
What Skin types benefit from Lucas ?
Definition
Dehydrated, Mature, Couperose, Irritated, Sensitive
Term
Describe KERATINIZATION PROCESS
Definition
1. starts in germinative layer
2. ends in horny layer
3. regenerates around every 4-6 weeks
4. Cells begin as live, plump, hydrated containing nucleus.
5.GRANULAR LAYER the Cells infiltrated by the protein keratohyalin and are robbed of their moisture & nucleus. become dehydrated.
6. Total of 28 days 14 germinative to horny
14 horny to squamous to be sloughed off.
7. Regulated by ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
Term
What factors SLOW KERATINIZATION?
Definition
Aging, hormones, stress, improper skincare
Term
What factors speed up keratinization?
Definition
Exfoliation, Vitamin A, Peels, Microderm Abrasion
Term
Describe the function of Melanin & where it's formed
Definition
Melanogenesis= process of melanin carried up to the germinative layer where the melanocytes produce pigment. They are carried up by the keratinization process. Melanin granules form & are increased by sun exposure.
with more active melanocytes=more freckles & age spots.
Term
Describe the composition of SEBUM
Definition
1. Glycerides
2. Esthers
3. Free Fatty Acids
4. Triglycerides
5. Cholesterin
6. Squalene
Term
What is the function of SEBUM ?
Definition
-softens, hydrates, & protects because of it's acidic pH
- combines with sweat & atmospheric moisture to create HLF hydro-lipid film
Term
Name & Describe 2 types of SWEAT GLANDS
Definition
1. Apocrine: exits to hair follicle' alkaline pH; triggered by hormones @ puberty; responsible for odor
2. Eccrine: exits to skin's surface;
acidic in pH; found all over body;
most common
Term
What are the fatty components on the skin's surface? Describe them
Definition
1. Hydrophobic fat- repels water; only 1; fat from keratinization.
2. Hydrophilic fat- water loving; from perspiration & sebum; makes up our HLF
Term
Define Buffer Capacity
Definition
Homeostatsis of skin- The ability of the skin to return to a normal pH within 24 hrs after being altered internally or externally.
Term
What is the function of the ACID MANTLE/ HYDRO-LIPID FILM ?
Definition
It provides protection from bacteria due to the acidic pH. It Hydrates, softens, and prevents TEWL trans epidermal water loss.
