Definition
  • think in terms of your personal belief system and how this/it affects your interactions with others in all aspects of your life

  • a discipline concerned with moral conduct and  decision making
  • professional standards of conduct or actions in relation to others

Slippery Slope Phenomenon
Definition
  • if the clr do nothing when an unethical behavior is in progress by others or yourself by compromising your ethical behavior - you are on the path of the ethical slippery slope
  • term describes what happens when 1 begins to compromise their principles - it becomes easier to slide down the slope - diminishing 1's sense of morality along the way

  • foundation in moral principles which are agreed upon assumptions or beliefs about ideals that are shared by members of the helping professions

  • requires to be just and fair to all clients, respecting their rights and dignity.

  • AOE: clr recognize that emotion plays a significant role in ethical decision making. Emotion informs reason.

Mandatory vs Aspiration Ethics
Definition
  • clrs function at a level of ethical reasoning that keeps them in compliance with minimal ethical standards. They comply with the letter but not the spirit of the ethical standards
  • While other clrs practice the highest standards of conduct that they can aspire to. they understand the spirit behind the code and the moral principles it governs.

Definition
  • A set of guidelines designed to set out acceptable behaviors for members of a particular group, association, or profession
  • they exist to protect the welfare of clts;
  • protect the public, educate members, ensure accountability, protect clrs and the profession from govt scrutiny

Definition
  • when clr is dealing with a legal issue, he/she should poses questions to immediate supervisor & ask for assistance
  • clr may requests consult with a lawyer
  • supervisor will seek legal advice thru her chain of command within organization
  • clr has to follow the legal advice of supervisor &/or lawyer whether they agree or not - personal protection

EXERCISING PROFESSIONAL JUDGMENT
Definition
  • clr must consult when his/her judgment is in question
  • do not involve an attorney when making a clinical decision
  • weigh the advice of colleagues about a legal matter - they are not attorneys
  • weigh the advice of lawyer in making clinical decisions on clinical issues
