Term
Definition of proliferative Verrucous Leukoplakia |
Definition
Disease of unknonw origin which exhibits a strong tendency to develop areas of carcinoma. PVL begins as s imple hyperkeratosis but tends to spread and become multifocal, slowly growing, persistent, and irreversible; in time areas become exophytic, wart-like and apparently resistant to all forms of therapy as recurrence is the rule.

Term
Definition of erythroplakia |
Definition
Persistent red patch on mucosa which cannot be clearly characterized clinically as any other specific disease entity |
Term
True or false: Leukoplakia is more likely than erythroplakia to carry higher risk of being severe dysplastic or carcinoma |
Definition
False; erythroplakia more likely then leukoplakia |
Term
Definition of nicotine stomatitis |
Definition
White, hyperkeratotic cobblestone appearance to palate punctuated by red dots corresponding to dilated openings of inflammed accessory salivary glands |
Term
How do you get nicotine stomatitis? |
Definition
Associated with smoking (pip and cigar); probably reactive to heat |
Term
True or false: Nicotine stomatitis considered premalignant especially when associated with reverse smoking. |
Definition
False nicotine stomatitis is not premalignant condition |
Term
Histopathologic findings of nicotine stomatitis |
Definition
Hyperparakeratosis, hyperorthokeratosis, acanthosis, salivary duct ectasia and squamous metaplasia and chronic inflammation of surrounding CT |
Term
Treatment and prognosis of nicotine stomatitis |
Definition
Discontinue smoking habit
Usually returns to norm 1-2 weeks (if persists treat like leukoplakia) |
Term
Benign Alveolar Ridge Keratosis (BARK) definition |
Definition
White rough papules or plaques on crest of alveolar ridge, esp in area of mandibular 3rd molars & adj retromolar pad |

Term
Treatment and prognosis of BARK |
Definition
Following histo conf of diagnosis, remove in entirety or leave w/ close followup
Good-no excess risk of malignant change |

Term
Smokeless Tobacco-Induced Keratosis (Snuff-Dipper's Keratosis) definition |
Definition
Wrinkled, thickened lesion resulting from chronic use of fine smokeless tobacco (snuff)
Term
Histologic findings of Snuff-Dipper's Keratosis |
Definition
Pale-staining surface layer of coagulated and degenerated, often anucleate, epi, sometimes covered by thin layer of parakeratin
Underlying CT may show hyaline deposits and sialadenitis |
Term
Description of pale surface layer of Snuff-Dipper's Keratosis |
Definition
Commonly shows spires (chevrons), often sharply demarcated from underlying viable epi which shows acanthosis and variable underlying chronic inflammation - epithelial atypia present in 8% of cases, epidermoid carcinoma rare except if pt smokes cigarettes or snuff is mixed w/ carcinogenic agent; often carcinoma is a verrucous carcinoma |
Term
Treatment and prognosis of Snuff-Dipper's Keratosis |
Definition
Discontinue habit after biopsy confirmation of clinical diagnosis
Generally good; will often disappear after tobacco habit is discontinued - but follow carefully; several studies have link long-term use of smokeless tobacco to dev of verrucous carcinoma of Ackerman |
Term
Use of smokeless tobacco also associated with: |
