What do you need to do for Question 3?
Definition
Using any part of the source, analyse the structure by focusing on the pace (what happens where, sentence to sentence) focus (look deeply into the focus on setting and the narrowing focus) and order (look at possible reasons for change in focus and the topics of each paragraph). Also comment on: paragraph size and order, where the extract has come from like the exposition [beginning] or rising action [just before the climax to keep the reader interested] or climax, the effect on the reader, and look at pathetic fallacy if commenting on where it is used [it would be better not to use it]. DO NOT ANALYSE LANGUAGE! This question should take about 10-12 minutes to answer and is worth 8 marks.

What do you need to do for question 4?
Definition
Using specific lines (an example would be line 18 to the end, its always the second have of the extract), analyse both structure and language. You are given a statement in which you need to either agree of disagree, it is easier to get higher marks it you agree to a certain extent (do not just disagree), the statement has two parts so you could agree to one and disagree to the other. The best way to structure your answer is to use: a clear point, quotation, explanation on hoe quote links to the point, writer's method (WM) and word level analysis (WLA), how the quote agrees or disagrees to the statement, new quote, analysis the same as previous quote, how quote agrees or disagrees to the statement (do the opposite of what you did on the last quotation), and a conclusion to summarise the arguments made. This question is 12.5% of the English Language GCSE grade and 25% of the English Language Paper 1 grade. This question should take about 20-25 minutes to answer and is worth 20 marks.

What do you need to do for Question 5?
Definition
You will be given a creative writing task based on a photo or a brief description. By choosing to do the photo, you can have a description ready to use; start of with what he photo is of, then zoom out and do a sky (if you have a description of a sunny sky but the sky in the photo is stormy then add an extra sentence to your written description to show that the weather has changed). A great way to get higher marks in this question is to do a monologue because then all you would need to do is do a description of the photo and then add on your monologue. This task will usually be on a similar theme to the given text. try to make the ending as powerful as possible, different ways to end it could be; finish with a plot twist, the main character could come to a realisation, end with a cliffhanger, or use a happy ending to satisfy the reader. The story always needs to start with an interesting opening sentence to make the reader engaged, you could also start by describing an unusual character to immediately create suspicion. Another way to engage the reader at the beginning is to start the story in the middle of the action. Direct address could be used with a rhetorical question. Use an interesting, well-organised structure and accuracy when writing the piece. You should spend around 45 minutes on this and it is worth 40 marks: 24 marks for content and organisation and 16 marks for technical accuracy.
