traders and pìrates, who with the backing of the English crown challenged the Portuguese and Spanish monopolies of sea trade. They were known for important voyages of exploration, and were probably best known for plundering foreign ships. They were secretly supported by Queen Elizabeth who shared in the profitsfrom selling the slaves. They strengthened the nation´s seafaring condition and helped the English defeat the spanish armada in 1588. |

One of the first to search for the Northwest Passag. In 1609 he sailed on behalf of the Dutch.He charted much of the coast of eastern N. America and explored the river that now bears his name. The next year he sailed on behalf of the English. He explored the bay in northern Canada also named for him. |
